Living with Horses in the Santa Monica Mountains

Horses have been trusted companions to humans in the Santa Monica Mountains for centuries. As the human population has grown, rural and wild lands have been impacted by development. Yet we still have thousands of acres of beautiful land, complete with trails for horses and riders. How do we best care for horses in the mountains? There are numerous laws on the books defining what is appropriate - and legal - stable management. The Horse Regulations Matrix describes the rules and regulations which affect those keeping horses on their property.

Horse manure has the potential to become transformed into world-class fertilizer: all it takes is time and a gardener willing to dig enough to integrate the composted manure back into the soil.
